To berimbolo or not to berimbolo

I was sparring after a berimbolo class. As always I was going to try out the new techniques. I went for the De La Riva guard. Leg between the guy’s leg, the other on the hip.  Grab the sleeve and the ankle. Ready, set and go for the berimbolo. Except that my partner turns his back towards me before I can invert myself.

“Go for the back! Go for the back!” I’m thinking. Grab the belt.

And my partner passes my guard.

Turns out, I was grabbing the belt with the wrong hand. Let go of the sleeve, not the ankle.
